Kay Yow was a beloved women’s basketball coach at North Carolina State University for 34 years. Coach Yow fought a very public battle with breast cancer for over 20 years, using her Hall of Fame career as a platform to generate awareness for the disease that ultimately took her life in 2009. Prior to her death, Coach Yow teamed up with her friends at the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association and The V Foundation for Cancer Research to create the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.
Coach Yow’s vision was that the Fund could be a part of finding an answer in the fight against women’s cancers through scientific research, assisting the underserved, and unifying people for a common cause. The Kay Yow Cancer Fund has raised over $7 million and allocated $2.515 million to cancer research in the five years since its inception in 2007.
