Each month, Blackman & Sloop CPAs, P.A. will highlight a client that represents business integrity and the spirit of community. It is our honor to present this month’s spotlight on Threshold Of Durham.

Threshold Members

Threshold is a psycho-social rehabilitation program for adults living in Durham who have severe and persistent mental illness. Threshold provides a full scope of services including prevocational training, supported work opportunities (part-time fully compensated employment), life skills development, housing supports, and educational, social and recreational activities. The agency provides enhanced opportunities for adults with serious mental illness to realize their potential, and to experience a sense of community and accomplishment.

Threshold’s programming has been designed to be evidenced based and best practice. In fact, the Model being utilized by Threshold had its beginnings in Manhattan, NY in 1948. Similarly to the first Clubhouse, Threshold opened its doors in June of 1985 through the sheer tenacity of parents who wanted a better outcome for their adult children who were coping with their respective mental illnesses. Serving Durham’s most vulnerable citizens for the past 27 years has been an honor and privilege.

Having a severe and persistent mental illness (SPMI) means that you have been diagnosed with one of the following; Schizophrenia, Bi-polar I, Major Depression with psychotic features, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Schizoaffective Disorder. Many of our members have co-occurring concerns such as diabetes, hypertension and mild cognitive impairment. Most of these other issues have been brought on because of the side effects of their medications. Imagine having to choose your sanity over your physical health. Which would you choose?

The ultimate goal of Threshold is to improve the quality of life for those we serve. We do this by facilitating personal well-being and community through meaningful work and relationships.  Threshold’s Model is based on staff and members working side-by-side collegially in a work-ordered day. All that is accomplished is done in order to keep the Clubhouse operational on a day-to-day basis.

Blackman & Sloop is proud to be a partner in providing services to Threshold. To learn more information about their services, volunteer time or make a donation, please visit http://www.thresholdclubhouse.org.
